A Response to “December Printing”

Posted in Announcements on July 22, 2008 by Nick

In response to my last post:

I’ve found a printer.  It’s Lebonfon.  I was going to go through Quebecor, but their quotes for a 120-page book were just as much as five 24-page books.  Lebonfon was much more practical.

I have not renewed my DBA.  I still have another year, but I really should do that.  It’s only like $5.

I got a 1099 set up.  Now I can be taxed all to hell for the $200 I’ll make.

The actual cover will be a little thinner and will have lots of yellow/orange wording on it.

Cover is done.  It took forever to do.  First, Colacitti and I couldn’t decide on how his face should look.  Then once that was done, the background was too simple, so that had to be redone.  Then it wouldn’t scan and/or print right so it had to be shipped to me.  Colacitti couldn’t get his money from Western Union because they wrote down the wrong name (they wrote his middle name instead of his last name) so I had to explain it so someone who spoke broken English and broken Spanish.  Once I got it, I had to do some practice inks (it’s been a while).  Once I started inking it, my nibs all dried up on me.  Once that was done, I had to scan it piece by piece (because the big scanner is being replaced) and put it together in Photoshop.  After that, I did my usual tones, but even that was a bit rusty.  Then I had to figure out a color that could be read easily on a completely black & white background.  Once that was done, I had to decide what to put on the spine, what to put on the cover (“Nick Jones AND Nicolas Colacitti” or “Nick Jones WITH Nicolas Colacitti” or “Jones/Colacitti” etc.) and then what to put on the back (a book synopsis?  I series synopsis?  Some sort of teaser?).  During this time I also had to figure out the exact size for a wraparound cover and I had to apply for an ISBN.  The cover took like 2 weeks.

I’m still not sure what to do with the other covers.  Right now they’re on the website separating chapters.  I was debating on whether or not to do that in the actual novel, but then I would feel compelled to do it with every novel.

I got a forward done.  Basically it just talks about my attitude toward Tiny Life at this point.

I’ve found a lot of people to send the book to, but I’m not sure about websites and podcasts and such.  If you know of any reputable ones, email me.

Advertising?  I don’t think I’ll be doing much.  I’ll email the same 1000 stores that looked at the preview and let them know it’s out in December, but I don’t think I’ll be getting a full page in Previews or anything.
